Exterior Wood Cleaning & Washing

Exterior wood can collect dirt, pollen, leaf staining, organic growth, and years of weathering that leave it looking gray, green, dark, or uneven.

Exterior Staining Pros provides professional cleaning and washing for decks, fences, porches, cedar siding, pergolas, sheds, playsets, outdoor furniture, wood ramps, and other residential exterior wood throughout the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City corridor.

We clean wood as wood specialists—not as a general pressure-washing company.

That means we look at the wood, its condition, any existing finish, and what is actually affecting the surface before choosing how it should be cleaned.

Wood Needs Diagnosis Before Pressure

A pressure washer is a tool, not a diagnosis.

Wood species, age, condition, existing stain or sealer, contamination, weathering, and the goal of the project can all affect the right cleaning approach.

Some projects may involve controlled pressure. Others may call for lower-pressure washing, cleaning chemistry, agitation, rinsing, or a combination of methods.

Safe wood cleaning is a system, not a PSI number.

We evaluate the wood first, then choose the cleaning process.

Deck, Fence & Porch Cleaning

Decks, fences, and porches can collect pollen, dirt, mud, leaf debris, organic growth, food residue, planter marks, and seasonal grime.

Shaded areas may stay damp and turn green or dark while sunny areas fade and weather differently.

We professionally clean:

  • Wood decks, railings, stairs, posts, lattice, and built-in wood features
  • Wood and cedar fences, gates, posts, rails, and boards
  • Front, back, covered, and screened porches
  • Porch flooring, rails, posts, trim, and other exposed wood

Cleaning can be performed as standalone maintenance or as preparation before future staining or sealing.

Cedar Siding & Outdoor Structure Cleaning

Natural-wood siding should not be treated like generic house washing.

Cedar siding, pergolas, gazebos, pavilions, arbors, trellises, privacy structures, and other exterior wood can weather differently depending on sun, shade, moisture, height, and orientation.

We evaluate the existing finish, wood condition, type of buildup, surrounding materials, and exposure before selecting the cleaning approach.

Sheds, Playsets, Furniture & Other Outdoor Wood

Exterior wood cleaning is not limited to large structures.

We can also evaluate:

  • Wood sheds and small outbuildings
  • Playsets and swing sets
  • Exterior wood doors and natural-wood garage doors
  • Adirondack chairs, picnic tables, benches, and other outdoor furniture
  • Standalone wood accessibility, wheelchair, and handicap ramps
  • Other appropriate residential exterior wood features

Different objects may require different cleaning processes even when they are made from similar wood.

Can Gray or Weathered Wood Be Cleaned?

Often, yes—but gray wood is not always simply dirty wood.

Exterior wood can change appearance because of UV weathering, loss of an old finish, weathered surface fibers, grime, organic growth, or several conditions at once.

Cleaning can remove appropriate contamination and improve the appearance of weathered wood, but it is not a magic eraser for every form of discoloration.

Not everything that looks dirty is dirt.

We determine what is affecting the surface before deciding what the wood needs.

Mildew, Algae & Seasonal Buildup

Exterior wood may develop green, dark, or patchy areas from mildew, algae, moisture, shade, dirt, pollen, leaves, tree debris, and other outdoor exposure.

Some staining may also involve rust, metal reactions, food residue, planters, or other sources.

We do not promise every deep mark can disappear invisibly.

The first step is understanding what the discoloration appears to be so the cleaning method fits the condition.

Cleaning Is Not the Same as Stripping

Cleaning removes contamination and weathered surface conditions where coating removal is not the primary goal.

Stripping is different.

If an existing stain or coating is failing and needs to be broken down or removed as part of refinishing, that becomes part of the larger restoration process.

Previously stained or sealed wood should therefore be evaluated before cleaning.

The goal may be to preserve the existing finish, maintain it, prepare for another compatible application, or remove a failing coating during refinishing.

That distinction matters.

Can Pressure Washing Damage Wood?

Yes, if the cleaning system or technique is inappropriate.

Damage can include wand marks, raised grain, fuzzy fibers, splintering, gouging, or uneven cleaning.

But pressure alone does not determine whether wood is being cleaned safely.

Chemistry, dwell time, agitation, rinsing, nozzle selection, distance, water flow, wood condition, species, existing finish, and operator technique can all matter.

Our goal is to use the least-destructive effective cleaning process rather than asking brute force to do the work.

Can Wood Be Cleaned Without Re-Staining?

Yes.

Professional cleaning can be a standalone maintenance service.

You do not automatically have to stain your deck, fence, siding, or other exterior wood after it is cleaned.

Sometimes cleaning is enough to improve appearance and remove seasonal buildup.

Sometimes it reveals that the existing finish is still performing.

Sometimes it shows that broader refinishing should be considered later.

Cleaning can reveal what the wood actually needs next.

Cleaning Before Staining or Sealing

Cleaning is also part of many refinishing projects.

Before new stain or sealer is applied, the wood may need dirt, organic buildup, weathered fibers, or other contamination addressed.

Once cleaned and dry, the surface can also be evaluated for raised fibers, remaining failed coating, roughness, or other preparation needs.

There is no universal rule that every cleaned surface must be sanded or that every project follows the same preparation sequence.

We evaluate the wood first.

Protecting Surrounding Property

Exterior wood usually sits beside other materials.

Depending on the project, that may include landscaping, grass, siding, windows, screens, doors, concrete, pavers, stone, hardware, lighting, furniture, vehicles, and neighboring property.

Those surroundings are considered when planning the cleaning process.

Cleaning products are used according to their actual requirements, with appropriate protection and rinsing for the conditions of the project.

Iowa Weather & Exterior Wood

Exterior wood throughout the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City corridor deals with spring pollen, rainfall, summer humidity, tree cover, lawn irrigation, leaf debris, snow, freeze-thaw cycles, and seasonal temperature swings.

Different sides of the same structure can weather differently.

A shaded fence may develop organic buildup while its sunny side fades from UV exposure.

A deck beneath trees may collect pollen and leaves while an open deck sees much stronger sun.

That is why we evaluate the actual surface instead of assuming every gray, dark, or green area has the same cause.

What Does Exterior Wood Cleaning Cost?

Cost depends on the actual project.

Factors can include:

  • Type and size of the wood surface
  • Height and accessibility
  • Rails, spindles, and other detail
  • One or both sides of a fence
  • Existing finish
  • Type and amount of buildup
  • Cleaning system required
  • Brightening or neutralization when appropriate
  • Landscaping and property protection
  • Furniture or object movement
  • Multiple surfaces
  • Whether cleaning is standalone or part of refinishing

The most useful way to price the work is to see the surface.

Photos are helpful.

Not Sure Whether Cleaning Is Enough?

Maybe your deck has gone gray.

Maybe the shaded side of the fence is green.

Maybe the cedar siding looks dark and uneven.

Maybe you want the wood cleaned without committing to staining afterward.

We will evaluate the wood, existing finish, contamination, weathering, exposure, and project goal, then determine whether professional cleaning makes sense and what approach is appropriate.
